- Story Text: China's leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping said he's hoping the friendship between China and the U.S. will grow over the decades.
At a state dinner in Des Moines Wednesday (February 15), Xi said, "I hope through the joint efforts of both sides, the tree of friendship between China and the United States will be like the oak trees in your state, grow and bear rich fruit and benefit not only this generation but future generations as well."
After visiting with lawmakers in Washington, Xi travelled to Iowa to visit with the family who hosted him in the small Iowa city of Muscatine back in 1985, when few imagined how far and fast he and his country would rise.
After a one-hour visit in Muscatine, he travelled to Des Moines to meet with Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, who hosted a dinner in Xi's honor.
Xi met with business leaders before the dinner and praised the people of Iowa for their success in farming and technologies like wind power.
His visit to Iowa during his closely watched tour of the United States one year before he is to take the helm of the world's most populous country avoided contentious U.S.-China issues. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
