The Senate Armed Services Committee, meeting on Thursday, unanimously approved the nomination of Congressman Richard Cheney as United States (US) secretary of defence.
Committee Chairman, senior Democrat Sam Nunn told the open hearing that "Congressman Cheney is highly qualified to be secretary of defence". His Republican counterpart, Virginia's John Warner, echoed the opinion that President George Bush's nominee was "an excellent choice" for the sensitive Cabinet post.
Cheney, 47, served as White House chief of staff for former President Gerald Ford, and is considered a tough, pragmatic manager who will be able to deal effectively with the Democrats' substantial Congressional majority and the US military-industrial complex.
The full Senate is expected to give the Wyoming Republican its final approval on Friday.
