- Story Text: Europe needs a financial transaction tax and stronger regulation fo financial markets, supporters of the anti-globalisation network Attac demanded outside Frankfurt stock exchange on Sunday (June 17).
The activists had set up a wall of sandbags to symbolise "a dam against speculation and for a financial transaction tax in Europe," as one protester told bystanders via megaphone.
Christoph Bautz, manager of the "Campact" organisation which takes its name from 'campaign and action,' said "the financial crisis over the past few years has shown that the deregulation of financial markets had catastrophic consequences."
"We got ourselves into the largest economic crisis of the last decades. We demand that consequences finally be drawn. There must be a stronger regulation fo financial markets. A first such step is the financial transaction tax which slows down at least the short-term speculation on financial markets," said Bautz.
On Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel had said she would campaign for a financial transaction tax, addressing concerns among the centre-left opposition that her government was only using the issue as a way to get euro crisis legislation through parliament.
The centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) have linked progress on the tax as well as growth-boosting measures to their approval for the fiscal pact and for the euro bailout fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
