Minister of Health Ehud Olmert told reporters after the weekly cabinet session that the operations, confirmed on Israeli television, prevented the use of indiscriminate force against individuals.
Rechavam Zeevi, leader of the right-wing Moledet Party, threatened to withdrew from the coalition government after the disclosure about the undercover squads, in which soldiers dressed as civilians to arrest wanted Arabs. Zeevi said releasing this kind of information to the "enemy" was contrary to any effort to fight the Palestinian uprising and "highlights Israel's weakness".
Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir told reporters that he would not comment until he heard Defence Minister Ariel Sharon's opinion.
Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, deputy chairman of parliament's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee and a former military governor in the occupied territories, called for parliamentary inquiry.
Palestinians allege that the undercover squads sometimes kill, rather than arrested suspects, but the military has denied this.
