- Story Text: Leftist youths, some armed with baseball bats, stoned police and journalists and set fire to cars during an anti-Gulf war demonstration in Paris on Saturday (January 26). A Visnews camera man was attacked and beaten. There were no other reports of injuries and no arrests were made by police.
The violence erupted at the end of a noisy march by about 10,000 demonstrators, most of whom had left the area before the incident, police said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests.
The demonstration, called by the French Communist Party and pacifist movements, drew far fewer than the 40,000 people who turned out for a similar march just before hostilities began.
Opinion polls show support for French participation in the war has risen since fighting began on January 17, with nearly 75 per cent backing France's involvement in the conflict with Iraq. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
