- Story Text: Mexican archaeologists have discovered an ancient offering site in Mexico City's historic Zocalo square.
Mexican archaeologists discovered an ancient Aztec offering site while conducting ongoing excavations in Mexico City's historic Zocalo.
The scientists found textiles, stone statues, amate paper, and other ancient relicis sealed in a stone box which kept them in remarkable condition.
"The condition in which the textiles were found is very unique, and other pieces such as the paper will open an investigation into how prehispanic paper was formed," said archaeologist, Eduardo Matos.
According to archaeologists, the site was part of the main temple and dedicated to Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain.
The scientist have been digging in the area since last March and so far have uncovered seven new offering sites.
Ancient sites were first discovered in the Zocalo in 1974. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
