- Story Text: Angry, dejected and disappointed, tens of thousands of Italian soccer fans left central Circus Maximus in Rome on Sunday evening (July 1) after watching a 4-0 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2012 finals.
The fans had gathered in the former Roman chariot track to watch the match on giant screens. But soon their dreams of victory turned to dust as they watched goal after goal being scored against them.
"We just didn't play, there wasn't a match" said dejected fan Gianluca Malgli.
"It just shouldn't have finished like this. I hoped and hoped and waved my flag, but it counted for nothing" said Federico Izzo.
Some bottles were thrown at one of the giant screens as Spain scored the last goal and organisers called for calm. But many fans were already leaving the grounds before the match had finished, with only a few prepared to put a brave face on the result.
"We are happy we got this far, it is fine" said fan Antonio Gianpaolo. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
