- Title: MEXICO: FEMINIST DANCE TROUPE DRAW ATTENTION TO WOMEN'S ISSUES WITH THEIR PERFORMANCES IN SUBWAY STATIONS ACROSS MEXICO CITY.
- Date: 18th January 2005
- Summary: (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) DANCER/CHOREOGRAPHER, CAROLINA CORTEZ SAYING: "I think that this a crucial moment in the history of the world when women's power is equal to that of men. Because, you have to have a balance and it is manifesting itself at the same time as these disasters like Juarez (many women being killed by an unknown killer), and Iraq. So, our main idea is that when a woman is attacked, society is being attacked and genocide against a culture and a race is being committed." COPY OF WOMAN'S TORSO (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) SPECTATOR LUCIA ROMAN SAYING: "This is a show that is important and should be shown to everyone. Big Brother is not the only thing there is, this is very interesting. Dance and culture, as well as the social dilemma of women is represented and it is great as an adult and also the children to see this. I hope this can be seen in more places."

- Story Text: Mexican women's dance troupe, Orto Solar, performs in Mexico City's subway stations to call attention to women's issues.
A Mexican women's dance troupe, Orto Solar, performs in subway stations throughout Mexico City hoping to call attention to women's issues, mainly violence against women.
"Our main idea is that when a woman is attacked, society is being attacked and genocide against a culture and a race is being committed," said Carolina Cortez the choreographer and one of the troop's three dancers.
The 10 minute dance is performed inside advertising space behind glass panes typically reserved for consumer products. The troop hopes to call attention to the suffering of women worldwide.
"Dance and culture, as well as the social dilemma of women is represented and it is great as an adult and also the children to see this," said spectator Lucia Roman after watching the dancers behind the glass.
The troop will continue to perform in Metro stations throughout the city until the end of January. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
