- Story Text: Despite the scare over European meat Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has not lost his enthusiasm for traditional German culinary favourites such as curry wurst.
My eating habits have not changed, I still eat meat," German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said on Tuesday (February 27) when asked if mad cow and foot-and-mouth diseases had tempered his appetite for meat.
German consumption of beef has fallen sharply since the confirmation of its first case of mad cow disease in November.
Reports about the use of antibiotics and hormones in pig feed and the detection of highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease in Britain have only heightened consumer worries.
Schroeder, speaking at a joint news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson, went on to recommend his favourite curry stand in eastern Berlin where crowds line up to get grilled sausage known as "curry wurst" on little cardboard plates to go.
"If you are interested in curry sausage, then go to Konnopke's," Schroeder said.
Owner Mario Ziervogel expressed satisfaction over the unexpected publicity: "It's nice to know that not just individuals enjoy (our product) but even the chancellor."
According to Ziervogel, Schroeder has never himself shown up at Konnopke's but instead has his driver deliver the Berlin specialty to the chancellor. Considering traffic congestion at almost all times of the day the fifteen minute drive from Konnopke's to the Chancellory means Schroeder's curry wurst most likely needs to be microwaved by the time it gets to him. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
