- Story Text: Italian PM Enrico Letta said on Friday (September 6) that the international community is walking on the edge while trying to decide how to solve Syrian crisis.
Italian Prime Minister arrived in St. Petersburg to participate in the summit of Group of Twenty of developed and developing counties.
The Syrian crisis has been at the top of the agenda in St. Petersburg, leaving many economic questions behind.
"It's obvious that in this situation we are in very complicated conditions. The whole international community is walking on the edge, because we have clearly stated that such crimes against humanity as the one committed by Assad can't be left unpunished," Letta said.
"At the same time, we know that we have to support the United Nations as this is the only organisation that can sanction (an action) that can then lead to certain results. And, as I've said before, we don't want a division, especially between the allies, the main allies such as Europe and the United States," he added.
Europe's top officials stopped short on Thursday (September 5) of endorsing a U.S.-led push for a military strike against Syria in response to last month's chemical weapons attack, and warned there could be no military solution to the 2-1/2-year-old conflict. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
