- Story Text: The new iPhone 7 went on sale in Japan on Friday (September 16) but the crowds in front of Apple stores in downtown Tokyo were smaller than in past years despite sell outs of certain types of phones.
Some 100 people queued from the day before the launch to be one of the first to get their hands on an iPhone 7.
The new iPhone sold in Japan, along with Apple Watch Series 2, will support Felica Type-F NFC contactless technology, enabling users to use it at train ticket barriers and store counters.
"I'm very excited because the new iPhone can be used to ride subways and pay bills. I cannot wait to use it for my shopping," one of the first customers, Tomoko Kumagai, said.
The new gadget, which eliminated the traditional headphone jack in favor of new technology, is also equipped with enhanced 12 mega-pixel camera that features an image stabiliser and longer exposure.
"The performance of the camera is enhanced every year, so I want to go out and take a lot of photographs with this," 29-year-old smartphone application developer, Koichi Sakata said.
Nintendo also fueled Apple's annual fanfare by an announcement that its popular game franchise Super Mario Bros would debut on the iPhone.
Apple said on Wednesday (September 14) the initial supplies of the iPhone 7 Plus and the new jet black color of smaller iPhone 7 have been sold out.
Apple shares rose up 3.5 percent at $115.20 on Friday, set for fourth straight day of gains. They already hit a 2016 high on Wednesday, fueled by strong early orders for the iPhone 7 in the U.S. as well as arch-rival Samsung Electronics' widely-publicized recall of potentially exploding Galaxy Note 7 smartphones. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
