And I googled it on the internet because it seemed like such an easy idea that would've been done and I saw that it wasn't really like the vision I had, so I just kind of came up with this fun, cartoony, realistic idea that was like a big cookie and it was perfect timing because it was right when the primaries were going on so opening day, I remember, we had no one coming into our shop and my dad put out the cookies up front on a bench, and then, like, everyone started coming." VARIOUS OF TRUMP COOKIE BEING PAINTED (SOUNDBITE) (English) CO-OWNER AND PASTRY CHEF OF CUPCAKE MARKET, SARAH SILVERMAN, SAYING: "So, when I thought of doing a face cookie, I thought like, which celebrity should we do? And the primary was just so hot right then and there. And we did Trump, Hillary and Bernie, so it's just perfect timing." Because it's all age groups, you know, young people want him, my parents want him." I don't think they know how much work goes into it, but as long as they buy the cookie, I am fine with that." One chef just rolls out the cookies, another chef pipes each color individually and another one paints on the cookie, so it's a really big process." (SOUNDBITE) (English) REPORTER ASKING: "So it's 40 cookies of just Trump?" (SOUNDBITE) (English) CO-OWNER AND PASTRY CHEF OF CUPCAKE MARKET, SARAH SILVERMAN, SAYING: "Yeah, for us to do 40 cookies it's definitely a two-day process." Oh man, you know. Put a brain in it." (SOUNDBITE) (English) PASSERBY, ALBERTO DELEON, SAYING: "One, I'd like to maybe eat it, but two, maybe just destroy the snot out of it. It looks awful. - Story Text: Co-owner Sarah Silverman (not the comedian Sarah Silverman) opened up Cupcake Market in April 2016 and had the idea to have iconic, "fun, cartoony" faces painted on sugar cookies.
"It was perfect timing because it was right when the primaries were going on so opening day, I remember, we had no one coming into our shop and my dad put out the cookies up front on a bench, and then, like, everyone started coming," Silverman told Reuters on Friday (May 19).
"When I thought of doing a face cookie, I thought like, which celebrity should we do? And the primary was just so hot right then and there. And we did Trump, Hillary and Bernie, so it's just perfect timing," she said.
Silverman said Trump still remains one of her best sellers even after the election, but people don't buy the cookies to eat it like it's a regular cookie.
"I do notice that a few people have sent us videos of them either throwing the cookie or eating the cookie like a monster," Silverman said. "I don't think they know how much work goes into it, but as long as they buy the cookie, I am fine with that. We do 40 cookies a day and it's usually like a two-day process. One chef just rolls out the cookies, another chef pipes each color individually and another one paints on the cookie, so it's a really big process."
Silverman initially thought her bake shop would primarily be selling cupcakes, but sales from her face cookies, which go for $16 (USD) each, make up the bulk of her business. Silverman's made a roster of famous cookie faces including Frida Kahlo, Michelle Obama, Katy Perry, Ryan Gosling, Kanye and Kim Kardashian West, and even makes custom faces. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
