And the fact that a gun ended up in the hands of somebody who shouldn't have had one and in an environment where there were children was absolutely horrent to me. And when our federal government failed to act I was really shocked and that's when I realized that I was not being a responsible parent or a citizen by not becoming involved in an issue I cared deeply about." And I went to them and said what can I do? I said I realize that as actors we have - we do have communication skills. And so I kind of got a group of people together who are willing to talk about gun safety issues and gun violence in America. People who would tweet about it, Instagram about it, show up, make calls, talk to volunteers. I felt that as communicators that's something we can do to spread the word." - Story Text: Actress Julianne Moore helped mark National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the "Wear Orange" campaign by illuminating the Empire State Building orange on Thursday (June 1).
Moore, who serves as chair of the Everytown Creative Council, said she knew she needed to get involved with gun safety awareness after the second deadliest school shooting in Newton, Connecticut left 20 children dead in 2012.
"They were children, they were little children in school in a place that's supposed to be the safety place for your children other than at home. And the fact that a gun ended up in the hands of somebody who shouldn't have had one and in an environment where there were children was absolutely horrent to me," said the actress.
"When our federal government failed to act I was really shocked and that's when I realized that I was not being a responsible parent or a citizen by not becoming involved in an issue I cared deeply about," she added.
Moore was at the event by the president of Everytown for Gun Safety, John Feinblatt and Natasha Christopher, whose son was shot and killed on his 15th birthday.
