If one were to imagine what the best solution would be that could come out of this conflict, then I think it would be a mutual agreement to end all support of terrorist or extremist organisations. We all know that it is not state organised, but often by private individuals, but the region has to succeed in putting an end to the financing of terrorist and extremist organisations. I think we agree very much on this goal and of course, and that is in our European and German interests, it is also that the Gulf Cooperation Council stays collectively stable and is able to negotiate collectively. It is one of the most substantial prerequisites for stability and security in the region. We have a huge vested interest that the GCC stays together." There have been also other developments that occurred between 2014 and today in terms of Qatar`s involvement in the affairs of the neighbouring countries, in terms of its harbouring of designated financiers of terror operate overly in Qatar. In terms of incitement and hate speech, that is projected on Al Jazeera and other networks and so the decision was made that we have to make it very clear that this is no longer acceptable." - Story Text: The stand-off between the tiny Gulf state of Qatar and its Arab neighbours would best be solved by an agreement across the region to prevent the financing of terrorism, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said on Monday (July 3).
Gabriel is on a tour of the Gulf region, where four Arab states have cut diplomatic and commercial ties with Qatar over claims that it is financing militant groups. Qatar rejects the accusations.
Speaking in Jeddah after a two-hour meeting with his Saudi counterpart Adel el-Jubeir, Gabriel blamed private individuals for "the financing of terrorist and extremist organisations" but added that the region has to put it to an end.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt are pressing Qatar to shutter its Al Jazeera news TV station and dial back its relations to Iran, Saudi Arabia's arch-rival in the Gulf region.
El-Jubeir added in the news conference that Qatar had harboured "designated financiers of terror" and hate speech had featured on Al Jazeera and other networks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
