Tell them not to join the army or the police or anyone? I could not. He joined (Islamic State) of his free will, but he did not hurt anyone. If he hurt anyone, even with a word, then I will apologise. There were people who were unjust, but there are others who did nothing, how should we treat them the same? I thought that I would be welcomed by the people of my village." They won't let us leave. We are women, are they afraid of women? Some people in other tents taunt us and say, you women of Daesh (a commonly used Arabic acronym for Islamic State) are slaughterers, you women of Daesh throw rocks at us." CHILDREN IN TENT (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) UNIDENTIFIED WIFE OF AN ISLAMIC STATE FIGHTER, SAYING: "If I was happy, would I come here? No, I would have stayed with them. Many women stayed in the field, many women blew themselves up, many women fought. The women around me all told me to join them, and I said no." Families of Islamic State fighters living in a refugee camp near Mosul said on Thursday (July 27) they were unsure what their future held, as the brutal nine months of urban warfare between government forces and the militants comes to an end.
Wives, mothers and children of the fighters, many of whom were killed or imprisoned in the offensive, are living alongside other refugees in the Jadaa camp south of Mosul. They say they are taunted and treated poorly by their neighbours for being affiliated with the militants.
Many of the families said they would like to return to their villages, but local authorities in Mosul recently issued a decree to exile Islamic State families to camps so they can be rehabilitated ideologically. Rights groups say collective punishment undermines the prospects for reconciliation after Islamic State, and risks fostering a generation of outcasts with no stake in Iraq.
The Jadaa camp is home to around 18,000 people. More than 1 million people fled their homes in Mosul and nearby villages since the fighting started. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
