- Story Text:Honduras' first lady travelled to Mexico on Monday (July 31) to open up a centre for migrants from the Central American country travelling overland towards the USA.
The 'Centre for the Protection of Honduran Migrants' was opened in Mexico City and gives Honduran citizens a chance to rest, eat and get online for information to aid their journey. According to reports, a large number of the thousands of migrants who cross over from Mexico are from Central America. Many are Honduran citizens fleeing poverty and violence back home.
But amidst pressure to crack down on migrants heading north, Mexico has detained and returned many migrants from Honduras. The Central American country puts the figure of Honduran detainees from Mexico at over 14,000.
Honduras' President Juan Orlando Hernandez has called for greater economic development to stem the flow of migrants heading north, saying the migration crisis is a humanitarian issue, and Washington shares responsibility because of US demand for drugs. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
