- Title: United States' athletes delighted Los Angeles will host the Olympics again
- Date: 3rd August 2017
- Summary: LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (AUGUST 3, 2017) (REUTERS) ***WARNING CONTAINS FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY*** U.S. TRACK AND FIELD NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (English) SIX-TIMES OLYMPIC CHAMPION AND MEMBER OF THE LOS ANGELES OLYMPIC BID COMMITTEE, ALLYSON FELIX, SAYING: "Well it was really an honour for me to work on the team and to go through all the presentations and work with the bid and I'm just really excited, you know. I love the Olympics and I love Los Angeles and I think that the Olympics has the power to really change people and so to be able to bring the Games back to the States and to know that children will be exposed to the Games and they'll be exposed to the wonderful sport of athletics as well. I think it's a really, really special thing, so I am excited, you know, to build up to that and just really proud of all the work that went into it and I think it's going to be a really great thing." MEDIA AT NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) OLYMPIC AND WORLD CHAMPION TRIPLE JUMPER, CHRISTIAN TAYLOR, SAYING: "I have to thank Kim Collins because I believe he's given us all hope that we can still continue. I don't think I'll be jumping at that time. I've got some dreams to run the 400 (metres), so hopefully I can take it there and maybe make a relay by then but I believe it's still possible." NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. 1,500 METRE RUNNER, JENNY SIMPSON, SAYING: "I confidentially with my coaches discussed that if it was going to be 2024 it would be at an age in which it would be difficult for me to try to make the team but probably far too tempting. So maybe it's good for me that it's so far out. I know my career will likely, as an Olympian level will likely be over as a middle-distance runner but I'm so excited, you know Allison's sentiments are so true for all of us; if you made it this far you very likely started when you were really young and you very likely looked at a team like the U.S. Olympic team and saw someone that looked like you that was excelling at this level and wanted to be them and it's unbelievable to think that sitting up at these tables that we are those role models for someone young in the United States and the opportunity through the Olympics is to be that role model at a world level. And so to bring it back to United States and show off the pride we have for our country and just the production and the show that we can put on and then also I mean to have a global championships or an Olympics of any kind in the United States feels like we'll be defending our home territory. So that'll be a lot of fun to be involved in whatever capacity; probably not as the 5800 meter runner for me." CAMERA OPERATOR AT NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) OLYMPIC LONG JUMP AND 4X100-METRE RELAY CHAMPION, TIANNA BARTOLETTA, SAYING: "It is a very exciting ordeal of the Olympics coming back to the United States and specifically for me I just like the way it feels in the lead up to the Olympic Games. It's almost like how it feels before Christmas; everybody is a little more polite, everybody is a little more exciting and willing to work together at such a divisive time in our country I think that's a much needed thing to look forward to because sport has the power to bring people of all demographics of all socio-economic classes together and like Stewart (a journalist at the news conference) mentioned earlier I have this e-book and since it was announced that L.A. was going to get the Olympics I've been getting a ton of emails for kids like 'can you help me so I can get to make the Olympic team in 2028'. And I just kind of like rub my hands together like OK let's see what we can do. And I like that excitement that's already taking place in the U.S. It's just a positive thing to look forward to." CAMERA OPERATOR AT NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) OLYMPIC SHOT PUT CHAMPION, RYAN CROUSER, SAYING: "They covered it pretty much all. I mean the only thing I would add is that the only thing possibly better than competing in the Olympics would be competing in the Olympics in your home country. And it's such a special movement and has the ability to bring people together like nothing else really can and to gather around not just as a country but as just human beings for one goal and sport. It's a very special movement. So to see that in the U.S. I'm very excited." NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS
