- Date: 11th August 2017
- Summary: BERLIN, GERMANY (AUGUST 11, 2017) (REUTERS) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, UN HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES, FILIPPO GRANDI, AND DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION FOR MIGRATION, WILLIAM LACY SWING, ARRIVING TO NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "I believe that - I am firmly convinced that an escalation of rhetoric will not contribute to a solution of this conflict. I do not see a military solution to this conflict, rather I see enduring work like we saw in the UN Security Council with members with resolutions in view of North Korea, and above all tight cooperation with the countries involved, especially the U.S. and China, but also South Korea, of course Japan. Germany will be intensively involved with the potential non-military solutions that we see. But escalation of rhetoric is the wrong answer." SWING SPEAKING IN GERMAN (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "As I said, I do not see a military solution and do not hold as necessary." MEDIA

- Story Text: There is no military solution to the United States' dispute with North Korea, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday (August 11), adding that a war of words between the two countries was the wrong approach.
"I don't see a military solution to this conflict," Merkel told reporters in Berlin. "I see the need for enduring work at the U.N. Security Council ... and above all tight cooperation with the countries involved, especially the U.S. and China."
U.S. President Donald Trump issued a new threat to North Korea on Friday, saying American weapons were "locked and loaded" as Pyongyang accused him of driving the Korean Peninsula to the brink of nuclear war.
Trump kept up the war of words on Twitter shortly after the North Korean state news agency, KCNA, put out a statement blaming him for the escalated tensions. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
