- Story Text: Residents and tourists in Paris said they were "shocked" but resilient on Friday (August 18) following van attacks in Spain which left 14 people dead.
On Thursday (August 17), a van mowed through crowds of people in Las Ramblas on Barcelona's most famous avenue and a similar attack occurred in Cambrils.
France's Foreign and European Affairs Ministry said 26 of the country's citizens were injured in the attack, with at least 11 of them in a serious condition.
Tourists and residents interviewed by Reuters along Paris' Champs Elysees Avenue said they felt relatively safe and resolute as the Spain attacks brought back painful memories of similar violence in France. Two separate attacks took place on the iconic avenue in 2017, with police targeted during the incidents.
Outside the Bataclan concert venue, where Islamist militants killed 90 people on November 13 2015, 48-year-old tourist Jacqueline Gueguen said she felt reassured by security in France.
At Orly airport, where a man was shot dead after he tried to seize a soldier's rifle in March, passengers arriving from Barcelona said life had to go on despite the violence. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
