- Story Text:Russian troops have intensified their attacks against
the Chechen capital Grozny to wrest the city from rebels who
remained defiant saying they were ready for a long, partisan
war.
Russian military shelled Grozny from hills above the
charred and shattered city on Sunday (January 16), where up to
40,000 civilians are still believed to be trapped.
Most of the civilians still remaining in the city spend their
days huddling in basements of what is left of the ruined city.
Some venture out after dark to get food and fresh water
but the almost continuous shelling of the city by the Russian
forces and presence of snipers makes it more and more
difficult to get provisions.
Eleonora, who has been hiding in the cellar with her
relatives and friends for almost four months said she had very
little hope left.
"We're sitting here because we are afraid to go out, they
are bombing out there, there are snipers. We have no money, no
food no water here, " she said.
Chechen rebels said on Sunday (January 16) they had
successfully blocked the advance of Russian forces both in
Grozny and in the highlands of Southern Chechnya.
The report conflicted with reports from Russian military
which said federal forces have killed up to 120 fighters over
the past 24 hours and continued their offensive in the
breakaway republic.
In rare television footage from the Chechen controlled
part of Grozny, the rebels were shown patrolling the streets
of the city and praying in their basement hideout.
Itar-Tass news agency quoted Gennady Troshev, deputy
commander of the North Caucasus forces, as predicting "serious
changes" in the operation to take Grozny in the coming days.
